I’m pretty lucky with my job in that I get to go to some amazing events, this week included, when I headed to London with Specsavers for the launch of the new Osiris glasses collection at the city’s most wonderful building, the Gherkin. Atop this contemporary feat of engineering, we sipped champagne and perused this minimal yet sophisticated new collection of frames, which has been designed exclusively for Specsavers by Couture designer, Jørgen Simonsen, whose A-list clientele has included leading ladies like Madonna, Nicole Kidman and Dame Elizabeth Taylor, says he has created the 60-piece range for ‘people who like to dare’.
‘Glasses are such a big part of fashion these days, it’s a huge market with increasing focus on and demand for striking design. Osiris is bold, modern and empowering, a fusion of strong, contemporary shapes and materials with unusual detailing in a kaleidoscope of colours,’ explains Jørgen. ‘It has been styled for people who ooze confidence, appreciate good design and are not afraid to stand out. I have always challenged convention in my design and this collection is no exception; the collection is for people who dare to be different and are happy to make a statement with their glasses.’
In case this name is new to you, Jørgen was born in the Danish town of Struer and moved to Paris aged 17 where he was fast-tracked through fashion college, completing a three-year course in less than two years. He has since worked for John Galliano, Alexander McQueen at Givenchy and Atelier Versace before going freelance. Remember that green dresses with the plunging neckline that J-Lo wore to the MTV awards? Yep, he’s the designer.
The collection itself will make you love your specs again with three main stories, Colour Pop, Frosted hi-tech and super translucent.
The 2013 Osiris eyewear collection by Jørgen Simonsen is available at Specsavers from 14 August.
