Prada Marfa and my curiosity

I have no idea where this came from but perhaps I can attribute it to instagram. Prada Marfa has always intrigued me. Why is it there? Where did it come from? And why in Marfa, Texas?

So let’s get the facts right. Prada Marfa is not a functioning Prada shop, so if you are in the area and fancy treating yourself. Soz, you can’t. Prada Marfa is an art installation that has been in place since 2005. Designed by two arts, Elmgreen and Dragset to represent a Prada store. It even has shoes and clothes in it that were handpicked my Muccia Prada herself. Sitting on the side of a road, and according to my research the installation will never be maintained or repaired. So basically it will fade away over time. Who knows, the Apocalypse might get it. So perhaps it should do a Kimmy Schmidt and get in the bunker now. My curiosity about it isn’t the only intrigue about it. Soon after it was installed it was quite badly damaged by vandals who actually broke into it even though the door isn’t actually a door. You can look up the history of how it’s been vandalised on wikipedia as this occasion was not the only one.

The thing that gets to me is why it’s there? And from my research I still can’t find this out. This one will just have to remain part of my unanswered curiosity.
