Notes: Summer 2012 style trends!

We have made it through the darkest days of winter and there is now light at the end of the tunnel. We may not be able to ditch our winter coats and boots just yet, but spring, then summer, is just around the corner and along with this change in seasons comes a welcome change in wardrobe. You can blow away your winter blues with warm, bright summer tones, light and loose dresses and open-toed shoes.

So you might be wondering what the new spring/summer 2012 fashion trends are. We have rounded up our top picks from Next to offer you some insight into what you’ll be wearing in a few months’ time.

A key look for Next is what it has dubbed ‘modern primitive’. It is a safari themed collection of animal and African prints, earth tones, cotton and silk that is smart yet casual, slightly tailored yet relaxed and informal. A whole range of items from dresses and skirts to trousers, shirts and blazers define this look. It is versatile and wearable and as summery as a burning African sunset admire from a yellow grass savannah.

One of our favourite looks from this trend is probably one of Next’s best dresses of the season. The midi shirt-dress in brown (pictured), silky looking viscose has a slight seventies feel to it with its three-quarter length sleeves, loosely tied waist and over the knee length. It also boasts a safari feeling shirt-style with lapels and button-up front. It is simple and elegant and needs nothing more than a chunky bronze necklace and some round-toed Mary-Jane shoes.

Another key look from this trend is a pair of smart chinos. Slightly tapered and loosely tailored chinos can cross the boundary between smart and casual. They can be dressed up with a pair of heels of played down with some flat, embellished sandals. The tapered, skinny look gives them some edge and they look perfect paired with a skirt or blouse or loose-fitting tee.

Speaking of shirts and blouses, a safari isn’t complete without a sleeveless shirt. You can choose between a wild African print or a warm, block coral colour. These look great with chinos or with shorts and skirts. Add some statement bangles to show off your tanned arms to the max.

A tribal print top is another must. Go for a bold, eye-catching print and don’t be afraid to play with colour. These loose fitting, round-necked viscose tops look great with skinny jeans or chinos and are the perfect way to get into Next’s ‘modern primitive’ trend.
