I spent most of Sunday engrossed in various live streams of New York Fashion Week SS14. And why not? The standard is impeccable and never have I had such an interest in the US fashion week which kicks off the most exciting month on my calendar. From being the longest fashion week, to showcasing some of my favourite designers, what are my favourites so far?
Whether it was Karlie Kloss strutting down the catwalk as if her life depended on it (well it kinda does) or Rita Ora swishing that new hair cut to close the show DKNY was visual for sure. With a street style vibe, and re-introducing over the top branding back into our lives, DKNY celebrated it’s 25th birthday in true NYV style. Although the colour wheel was predominantly monochrome, suggestions of turquoise, lemon and pink were a nice feminine addition to a very masculine designed collection. My personal favourite is the full length lemon trench coat, but on the other extreme, there was something about the head to toe DKNY branding as below that had my heart rushing. Or maybe that was just Karlie, I’m not entirely sure.
You gotta hand it to Diane who is part of the furniture in New York at this stage, she knows clothes and moreover, she knows what women want from their closets. With a starstudded front row, including Jessica Alba and to Naomi Campbell and Karen Elson making cameos, DVF was just a treat. Shapes galore were a feast for the eye, from the full length cobalt blue maxis, to the a-line skater skirts co-existing with vibrant sunset prints. My picks are the gold metallic shorts (think Kylie in the “Spinning Around” video) and the white plunging neckline jumpsuit. Oh I want it all!
A Michelle Obama favourite, Jason’s evening wear leads the way on how to make a gown look contemporary. It’s a true skill that very few designers can master, but somehow this young and popular designer gets it right every season. A nude palate graduated into dark and luxurious shades of emerald green and midnight blue which managed to maintain a sexy aesthetic using sheer fabrics layered over swimwear. But the collection was not void of tailoring with an homage to mannish suits, especially the look styled with a sleeveless jacket. But nothing could beat the finale piece, a stunning gown in soft silver, starting with a satin body and subtle silk ruffles. Sigh.
