Director Steven Spielberg, Wicklow based actor Daniel Day-Lewis and Oscar winner, Sally Field, along with President Michael D. Higgins, were among the guests who gathered at the Savoy Cinema on Sunday, 20th January, 2013 for the European premiere of “Lincoln”. The event was a cultural gathering of the Irish and American film worlds, one of the first of Fáilte Ireland’s Gathering events of 2013. Guests in attendance first gathered in The Gresham Hotel where they were treated to a Moët & Chandon champagne, before walking the red carpet to the Savoy Cinema.
When the credits rolled, guests including Steven Spielberg, Daniel Day-Lewis and Sally Field, were escorted to The Burlington Hotel for a very special ball, where memorabilia from the film was auctioned to raise funds for The Wicklow Hospice Foundation. Spielberg made the items available as a special favour to his close friend Daniel Day-Lewis, who is a patron of the local charity. Items auctioned included Lincoln’s handmade knife, white gloves and miniature toy soldiers, along with other items used while filming the blockbuster. During the evening Moët & Chandon invited celebrities and guests to autograph a 15-litre Nebuchadnezzar bottle, which was provided specially for the event.
