Icon: The Met Ball 2012

I’m making a bucket list and on that list is a) attending the Met Ball and b) attending the Met Ball with the designer of my dress preferably Tom Ford. Last night’s eagerly awaited fashion event of the year, was, honestly, not as great as I had hoped. I’ve spent the early hours of this morning trying to figure out trends (short dresses) best dressed (Cary Mulligan) and worst dressed (Elizabeth Banks) and I’m quite bewildered by the whole  thing. The 2011 ball was a triumph in style and perhaps set the bar fairly high and this year could not live up.

The front runners…

Carey Mulligan in Prada

Clearly, Carey Mulligan is the outright winner in a shimmering sequin a-line dress by Prada. The large sequins are flattering on her small frame and her short blonde hair is a perfect match for a halter neck. An outsider to say the least but beautifully styled Reneé Zellweger in Emilio Pucci was a surprise. The black gown with low back and in the words of Black Sabbath “Crazy Train” (it was soooo long) looked stunning on her and it was nice to see her wear something other than Caroline Herrera.

Elizabeth Banks in Mary Katrantzou

I’ve been a fan of Mary Katrantzou since she hit the London scene with her prints but the gown on Elizabeth Banks was maybe a weak point for the designer. The peplum was a nice nod to this season’s trend but the combination of prints and stripes just didn’t do it for me. I’m also slightly disappointed with Jessica Alba in Michael Kors, I feel like we’ve seen the metallic one shouldered dress too recently. But this dress will be great when we can officially call it vintage.
