I generally find it hard to come up with gift ideas for Father’s Day every year and this year is no different. My Dad is a fairly simple man; he is always so genuinely pleased with anything we give him and that’s one quality that I really admire. He’s never let us want for anything our lives and worked so hard to provide a lovely and safe home for us. So the least I can do is mark the occasion with something he’d like. My mum is hilarious with suggestions and will always come up with things like “polo shirts” as “he is a bit short of them” and I feel like this is terribly boring. But he likes them so I deliver on it. If you are seeking some inspiration then I have a few fairly easy ideas for you to get your Dad this year.
Hats and the basics
My Dad loves a Panama hat for when on holidays. It’s also the time when he enjoys wearing socks with sandals. He has his own way of styling his clothes let’s say. I found some nice bits at the Powerscourt Town House Centre from Kennedy McSharry who have been making menswear accessories for a very long time so you are getting some good quality with this one. The Panama Hat is €95 and if you prefer just a straw one, or a silk bow tie, then these start at €35.
Somewhere to go
My Dad loves going to things, and I recently discovered some great exhibitions in particular at the National Museum of Ireland, that make for nice afternoons out. My Dad is retired so he has some time on his hands. I like the idea of booking him a ticket to do something for himself, like the current exhibition of Leonardo di Vinci drawings on display at the National Gallery on Merrion Square. Entry is free but booking is required.
A little luxury
Dad’s need some luxury in their lives, so I thought something from Tom Ford may be a nice idea. Black Orchid is a classic fragrance and although it is a little bit more expensive, Dad is definitely worth it. Yes, ok, it might be aftershave which can be a bit, well, uninteresting but if your Dad has never used this, he’ll become obsessed with it. This one is available from Brown Thomas.
