Designer Q&A – BEDOUIN

Over London Fashion Week I had the pleasure of discovering new label, BEDOUIN, which is gaining a following thanks to it’s edgy take on day to day fashion. And if you like bomber jackets, then you will LOVE this one. I met up with Andraya Farrag, founder and Creative Director of BEDOUIN to hear all about how she started her label and her ambitions for its future.

LW: Tell us about your background, how did you come to be a designer?

AF: I have had a love for art and design from a very young age and so always knew that I wanted to do something creative. I eventually enrolled at Central Saint Martins (CSM) where I graduated with a BA in Fashion Design with Marketing. During my time at CSM I was surrounded by talent and had some incredible mentors and tutors that really inspired me to push myself further.

LW: What inspired you to start your own label?

AF: After graduating, I moved to India for several months where I worked in an embroidery factory overseeing designs for brands such as DVF. Having also lived in New York and Dubai, travel has become a necessity to me so being able to combine work with living in a new and inspiring place seemed like the perfect combination. It was here that I realised that very often you are forced to change your style or adapt to the city you are in which is where BEDOUIN comes in. I wanted to create a brand for the spontaneous jet setters that allows them to have “Style Without Borders.” BEDOUIN combines a love for culture with contemporary design creating versatile travel friendly pieces pieces that live beyond the season.

LW: For your current SS16 collection, what are your stand-out pieces?

AF: We have become quite well known for our bomber jackets and this season the AZTEKA Bomber Jacket has become the must-have BEDOUIN item. For SS16 we have been inspired by Mexico which is represented on this jacket through tribal inspired cutwork embroidery. I am also a fan of the CANCUN Dress, it’s loose-fit but feminine shape makes it a perfect item for the beach or evening and the crease free fabric makes it the perfect travel companion.

LW: Tell me about your thought process, from the idea to how it becomes a piece of your collection?

AF: Every season is inspired by a different culture, environment or destination combined with contemporary design and luxurious fabrics. Once the seasons story is in place we research heavily into traditional dress, colour, pattern and silhouette and choose fabrics that compliment. These ideas are then re-imagined to become relevant for the contemporary woman. I like to work as 3D as possible so we get the designs into fabric straight away and work on the fit and the silhouette right up until the last minute.

LW: What has been your favourite career moment so far?

AF: The past two years have taken me on such an incredible journey so it’s really hard to choose! It was amazing seeing our collection hanging in Harvey Nichols in Dubai and it has been such a dream being part of London Fashion Week!

LW: If you could dress anyone, who would it be (past or present)?

AF: Grace Jones for pure fun factor!

LW: Who are your role models?

AF: I look up to many designers but I particularly like Victoria Beckham. Although she had a great platform before becoming a designer I believe she is a fantastic business woman and despite her fame she works hard and oversees every stage of her collections. I also look up to many of my family and friends, many of them have encouraged me to work hard and dream big and I am very thankful for that.

LW: What will be the focus of your next collection?

AF: BEDOUIN AW16 is inspired by traditional craftsmanship and art from Japan. You can expect a Fusion of urban street style with feminine design and classic tailoring in luxurious fabrics. This season presents effortless style with a playful spontaneity and a subtle confidence.
