If you are not up to speed with Topshop Unique, then let me take this opportunity to make you better informed. Once you know about it, its edgy aesthetic, super-cool-personality-led-fashion, then you will be addicted. Unique is the high street brand’s premium label to be found online and in stores in the UK. If you ever pop into the Topshop on Oxford Street, then having a look at the new season is a must.
I was delighted to be sitting front and centre in the decadent surroundings of Tate Britain, to see what’s coming up for next season. And, honestly, it was my favourite show of fashion week. The style was wearable, yet had an undertone of cool that sometimes scares me. But this collection had a different, innate, appeal. Two things stood out for me, and they’re leather and coats.
A staple for winter, leather pieces are not just seasonal, they are timeless. Unique’s take on leather for their collection had a fashion blogger look in my eyes. High waisted mini skirts, cross over jackets, pencil dresses and the forever must-have of leggings ticked all the boxes of pieces that a fashion forward wardrobe should have. But it was the styling that nailed it. Mixed with animal prints, structured shirts and blazers, this was styling right up my street.
Unique will make our coat lengths longer, so a good heeled boot or shoe will be on your shopping list for Autumn. But mini skirts layered under dark coloured coats made the combination look effortlessly cool, while keeping the body in proportion. I’m going to keep saying cool, it’s perfectly appropriate. So again, I am going to come back to styling. Shirts tucked in and shorter length knits will keep your body looking as long as a supermodel. The images I’ve chosen from the collection will act as a good tutorial for styling this look for next season.
Each individual piece had me excited, but the overall presentation of the collection is what really inspires me. We can take trends like leather and coats from any collection, but none combined them, styled them, or aligned them quite as well as Topshop Unique. Take note, this is the collection that will inspire.
And PS, a special mention to my friend Sam Rollinson (aka supermodel extraordinaire) who walked in the show, and is pictured in the top image.
